World-class musicians at the Concertgebouw

The concert opens with Mozart's Overture to the opera Idomeneo, re di Creta, followed by the Violin Concerto by the most famous 18th-century French composer of African origin, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The evening ends with one of the gems of the symphonic repertoire.

Birds singing, a fanfare, plenty of dancing: Dvořák clearly has something to celebrate in his Eighth Symphony. He wrote the piece in honour of an award he received in Prague. The cheerful work is therefore full of Bohemian folk influences from the region in which he was born and raised.

Elim Chan conducts

Taking to the stage in the magnificent Main Hall at Concertgebouw on August 17 is the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra conducted by Elim Chan. According to The Sunday Times, she is "a rare example of a young conductor who is simultaneously brilliant and who does not show it off. She is an absolute pleasure to watch."

About violinist Randall Goosby

The young violinist Randall Goosby is a trailblazer in the making. His debut album Roots is a celebration of African-American music which explores its evolution from the spiritual through to present-day compositions - and it’s flying off the shelves! Randall Goosby’s own words sum up perfectly his commitment to being an artist who makes a difference: “For me, personally, music has been a way to inspire others”.

So, ever since the start of his successes on stage with, amongst others, the New York Philharmonic, he has mainly played music by under-represented composers, often of African-American or Afro-European descent, like Chevalier de Saint-Georges, an eighteenth-century musical genius who grew up on his father's plantation where his mother was enslaved.
