A church may not sound like the most typical location to enjoy your favourite beers, yet Groningen's beloved Martinikerk has been a popular beer venue for many years.
A vast array of fantastic beers
Dutch and international beers will be flowing, both draft and bottled, to delight your taste buds and provide the perfect atmosphere for a memorable evening out with friends or colleagues. The list of participating breweries is astounding.
Besides the fantastic beers, there are going to be masterclasses given by international beer experts, a brewing competition for amateur and professional brewers, as well as a beer and food competition. Browse these beer activities on the festival website.
The beer festival opening times are as follows:
- Wednesday, April 3: Beer dinner from 7pm
- Thursday, April 4: 7pm-11pm
- Friday, April 5: 7pm-11pm

Masterclasses at Groningen Beer Festival
The Groningen Beer Festival is renowned for its experts who pass on insider beer knowledge to aspiring beer aficionados in the masterclasses.
[April 4, 8.30pm-9.15pm] Trappist Beer Masterclass
Three different Trappist beers will be presented and can be tasted in the Trappist Beer masterclass. It costs 25 euros including entry into the general part of the beer festival on the same day.
[April 4-6 at various times] Exclusive tours
For 25 euros, including the entrance fee to the festival, you can take an exclusive tour with British beer journalist Melissa Cole with explanations about selected beers.
[April 5-6, 5.30pm-7.30pm] VIP masterclass and cruise with beer expert
Starting with a beer and food tasting cruise, as well as a guided tour throughout the Martinikerk, beer expert Yu Mey Kwee will introduce you to some fine specialist beers. The fee is 32,50 including entrance to the general festival.
[April 6, 4pm-4.45pm] Barrel-aged beer and canned beer masterclass
In the speciality beer world, the finer points of barrel-ageing and the innovations of beer-canning are fascinating and will be summed up by the owner of the Moersleutel Brewery. It costs 25 euros including entry into the general part of the beer festival on the same day.
