The main blues performances take place in cosy cafes across the city of Delft. However, there will be plenty of special blues events complementing the music, from cinema to theatre and from expert talks to interactive workshops, as well as special concert performances:
Life in 12 Bars
The blues film Life in 12 Bars will be shown at Filmhuis Lumen on Thursday, February 21. It's a documentary about the blues guitar demi-god Eric Clapton. There will be a live blues band performing in the foyer to bring film-goers right into the blues vibe.
Preaching the Blues
Preaching the Blues, at Rietveld Theatre on February 21, is a performance in music, image and story about the origins of the blues on the Mississippi Delta, evolving with the migration of rural dwellers to big cities in the 1950s.
Mali to Mississippi
In this one-man show, Joep Pelt gives a musical talk about the West African roots of blues, from Mali via the Caribbean slave route to the southern United States. Accompanied by stories, photos, and of course, the many songs Joep collected along the way, this is a fascinating event.
New Orleans Voodoo Vintage College
On February 23 at the Rietveld Theatre, in an evening event called In New Orleans Voodoo Vintage College, musician and music historian Roel Spanjers brings the audience on a musical journey through the rhythms and sounds of New Orleans, owing to his experience of playing and touring with blues heroes in the US.
Join in the Harmonica Workshop at Hampshire Hotel on Saturday, February 23. It costs only 20 euros (including a harmonica!) and you can learn the basics of the fun and fascinating pocket-size instrument often heard in blues.
