The NYO Jazz from the United States will perform in Amsterdam for the second time. Led by trumpeter Sean Jones and with jazz diva Dee Dee Bridgewater as special guest, the big band plays well-known jazz standards and brand new arrangements, from early swing to blues, from Duke Ellington's Mood Indigo to Gerald Wilson's Blues for Yna Yna.

NYO Jazz returns to The Concertgebouw in July 2023

After the swinging debut at The Concertgebouw in 2018 with Dianne Reeves, NYO Jazz returns this summer with Dee Dee Bridgewater. Each year, NYO Jazz from Carnegie Hall New York selects the best 16-19 year old jazz players from across the United States.

This summer, led by Sean Jones, they'll play jazz standards by jazz legends Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Hargrove, amongst others, and new arrangements by John Clayton. In the summer of 2023, Dee Dee Bridgewater joins NYO Jazz as special guest for a tour to some of Europe’s leading festivals.

Dee Dee Bridgewater

“Jazz should be accessible to everyone,” says the legendary Dee Dee Bridgewater, who has collaborated with jazz stars such as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. Bridgewater began her career in America in the late 1960s as a singer in a rock and R&B band, but switched to jazz in the 1970s. The charismatic jazz singer won three Grammy Awards and her acting talent was rewarded with a Tony Award.

Sean Jones

Music and spirituality go hand in hand in the artistic vision of trumpeter, composer, teacher and activist Sean Jones, the music director of NYO Jazz. From the church choir in Warren, Ohio, he came to the trumpet through drumming. His acquaintance at the age of ten with the work of Miles Davis and a few years later with that of John Coltrane determined his musical course.

Sean Jones was principal trumpet player in Wynton Marsalis' renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He also performed with legendary names such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Dianne Reeves. He is a sought-after and much-loved teacher, the perfect man to lead the young musicians of NYO Jazz.
