BROOS dance performance at the International Theatre Amsterdam
BROOS (meaning brittle) is a scintillating, physical dance performance about youth, old age and the fragility of life. In a patchwork of narratives, audiences can experience the heartbeat of various moments in time.
A strong physical and theatrical dance performance
BROOS, the latest theatre work by Conny Janssen, tells the story of the vulnerability of existence, from our first cry to our final breath. The adventurous group of 15 dancers from the dance company Conny Janssen Danst comprises both young talents and familiar faces. Live music has also been composed especially for BROOS by Maartje Teussink.
The artistic director Conny Janssen's defining characteristics can be seen within this production: the strong physical and theatrical power of dancers and the surprising diversity of the performances.
About the choreographer
The Dutch choreographer Conny Janssen was born in Rotterdam in 1958 and completed her professional training at Rotterdam Dance Academy in 1982. Ten years later, she founded her own professional dance company in Rotterdam and ever since, Conny Janssen Danst has been presenting inventive, powerful and moving performances. Her work has received numerous awards and has appeared at many prestigious festivals.
Conny’s Janssen’s work is very much combined with a refined choice of music, design and lighting. She draws her inspiration from the big city, a fast-moving vibrant world, full of diversity, which leaves more room for the dancers’ narrative.
About the composer
Maartje Teussink, as well as being a composer, is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. Her composition style can be described as lyrical and alternative. She creates musical atmospheres and soundscapes, exploring boundaries, with a combination of different musical influences.
According to the Dutch newspaper Trouw: “Multi-instrumentalist Maartje Teussink is an alchemist in a musical laboratory full of picking guitar riffs, throbbing basses and spherical soundscapes.”
