Koninklijke Schouwburg, Korte Voorhout 3, 2511 CW, The Hague

Known around the world for his fascinating documentaries and wild films that explore human nature and obsession, Werner Herzog will be in The Hague this October 5.

Interviewing Werner Herzog

Werner Herzog's new book, The Future of Truth, explores a world undermined by fake news, political manipulation and artificial intelligence, and asks the philosophical question: what is true? And how does the truth of poetry and cinema relate to empirical facts? His fascinating thoughts and memories are woven together in the book in his own unique way.

He will be interviewed by Dutch journalist Rob van Scheers, who has himself written many books on music, film and sports.

Herzog is renowned for his ability to insert deep philosophical meaning into everyday situations, and any conversation with him is certain to lead to interesting ideas and propositions.

Werner Herzog's work

Werner Herzog became world famous with films such as Fitzcarraldo, a film about a man's obsession with bringing opera to the jungle, Nosferatu, a retelling of the legend of Dracula, Encounters at the End of the World, a documentary exploring the kinds of people who go to live and work in Antartica, and Grizzly Man, the tragic true story of a man who decided to live with bears in Alaska. His films are often about outcasts who are in an extreme relationship with nature.

In recent years he has increasingly established himself as an acclaimed writer. His book The Twilight of the World tells the tale of a Japanese soldier on a small island in the Pacific Ocean, who, 30 years after the end of WWII, still thinks the war is ongoing. In his memoirs, entitled Everyone for Himself and God Against All, Herzog describes a life full of adventures, as if his life were his best film.

Come and hear Werner Herzog speak

The Royal Theatre (Koninklijke Schouwburg) is just a 10-minute walk from the central train station in The Hague, so it's very easy to come by public transport from other Dutch cities.

To hear Werner Herzog in his own words, you can get tickets on the Crossing Border website. Crossing Border organises a yearly festival at the end of October in The Hague which celebrates international literature and music.
