Don't miss the chance to experience the sound of one of the most renowned orchestras in the world, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted for the first time by Semyon Bychkov this summer.

Semyon Bychkov

Semyon Bychkov is regularly invited by orchestras such as the Vienna and Berliner Philharmonic, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and the symphony orchestras of Chicago and San Fransisco. He holds the Klemperer Chair of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Gunther Wand Chair with the BBC Symphony orchestra. The International Opera Awards named Semyon Bychkov 2015’s Conductor of the Year.

Apart from the symphonic repertoire, opera plays an important part in his career. In 2003, Bychkov made his debut in Covent Garden with Elektra by Richard Strauss. He conducts its productions with the Metropolitan in New York, The Opéra in Paris, the Viennese State Opera, The Scala in Milan and the Salzburg Festival.

Semyon Bychkov made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1984. He has been a very regular guest ever since, most recently in June 2020 with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in a livestream concert from the Concertgebouw.

About this concert

Conductor Semyon Bychkov shares with the Concertgebouw Orchestra a great love for the music of the symphonic master storyteller Detlev Glanert. This time, he will conduct Glanert’s Prager Sinfonie, setting texts by Franz Kafka, who was born in Prague. In addition to influences from Brahms, Mahler, Ravel and others, Glanert’s Symphonic work reflects his experience as a composer of opera. Like no other, Glanert knows the power of drama and the human voice. His prager Sinfonie combines Kafka’s storytelling through Tanja Ariana Baumgartner and Christian Immler with the colourful richness of the orchestra.

Felix Mendessohn, too, was a born storyteller, as his atmospheric "Scottish" Symphony illustrates.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was founded in 1888. Its distinctive sound has made it one of the world’s leading orchestras.

The orchestra is famous for its renditions of works by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Anton Bruckner, and for its long-standing concert traditions such as the St Matthew Passion in the week before Easter and the Christmas Matinee. It has always worked closely with contemporary composers.

World-famous guest conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Iván Fischer, Daniel Harding and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will be coming to Amsterdam to lead the orchestra next season.

The Concertgebouw Orchestra has had just seven chief conductors to date. The eighth was announced on 10 June 2022: Klaus Mäkelä will be joining as artistic partner as from the season 2022-23 season and will become chief conductor in 2027. This season sees six extraordinary programmes with Klaus Mäkelä at the helm.
