Come and witness the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra playing Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2 and Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade at the Concertgebouw.

Kochanovsky conducts Sheherazade

Russian conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky is one of today’s rising stars. In this concert, he conducts an all-Russian programme for his debut with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, with Rimsky-Korsakov’s magical Sheherazade as its high point.

Truls Mørk plays Shostakovich

Shostakovich cello concertos are among the composer's best-known works. The virtuosic cello concertos were written for Mstislav Rostropovich during some of the composer's most fruitful years in the 1950s and 1960s. Besides dashing virtuosity, the concertos also include substantial symphonic elements: the second cello concerto was originally intended as a symphony by the composer but later evolved into a concerto. The soloist is one of the most respected and prestigious contemporary cellists, Truls Mørk.

About the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra

The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1985 with the merger of three existing ensembles: the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since its formation in 1985, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra has also been the house orchestra of the Dutch National Opera.

Concertgebouw - the home of classical music in Amsterdam

Completed in 1888, this impressive building overlooking Museumplein has been the centre of classical music in the Netherlands for well over a century. It houses three beautiful performance spaces: the grand Main Hall for orchestral performances, the Small Hall for quartets and other chamber music, and the more intimate Choir Hall for recitals.

With annual attendance hitting more than 800.000, the Royal Concertgebouw has the world’s second-highest attendance record of its kind.
