On December 11, 12, 13 & 15, Iván Fischer takes to the stage in Amsterdam as he conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra, with Maria João Pires as the star soloist. They will be performing works by Mozart, Diepenbrock and Dvořák. Get your tickets now!

Maria João Pires plays Mozart

When Maria João Pires takes her place at the piano and leads you into Mozart’s sound world, you simply lose track of time. You can’t get any closer to the composer than this! The "Jeunehomme" concerto is named after the amateur pianist Victoire Jenamy - a discovery not made until 2004 - rather than referring to Mozart’s own youth at the time of its composition.

Honorary guest conductor Iván Fischer also leads the Concertgebouw Orchestra in two works brimming with optimism, joie de vivre and a love of nature. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 is a work of mature mastery. The composer had achieved international fame and was at the height of his powers when he wrote it. And as his operatic ambitions grew, so did the dramatic quality of his symphonies, as the richly varied Eighth demonstrates.

Marsyas by Alphons Diepenbrock, the Dutch classicist turned composer, is a fine rarity. Diepenbrock stayed true to classically Greek themes, as in his incidental music about a faun who challenges the gods to a musical duel. Performed here is the Entr’acte, nicknamed Zwerftochten door het woud (Wanderings Through the Forest).

Iván Fischer conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra

Iván Fischer is active as a composer and as opera director for his Iván Fischer Opera Company. He is also the founder of several festivals, including the Vicenza Opera Festival. In the past, Iván Fischer was Music Director at Kent Opera, Opéra National de Lyon, Principal Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, and chief conductor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, which named him honorary conductor.

Ever since 1987, Fischer has made guest appearances with the Concertgebouw Orchestra almost every year. In October 2020, the orchestra appointed him honorary guest conductor with effect from the 2021/22 season.

Iván Fischer received the prestigious Kossuth Prize, the Ovation Prize, and the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award for his support of international cultural exchange. He was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Iván Fischer limits his guest conducting appearances to very few orchestras in order to spend enough time and attention to his work as a composer, his Budapest Festival Orchestra, his opera company and the continuous development of creative ideas. He is a well-known advocate of human rights, democracy and tolerance.

About the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was founded in 1888. Its distinctive sound has made it one of the world’s leading orchestras.

The orchestra is famous for its renditions of works by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Anton Bruckner, and for its long-standing concert traditions such as the St Matthew Passion in the week before Easter and the Christmas Matinee. It has always worked closely with contemporary composers.

The Concertgebouw Orchestra has had just seven chief conductors to date. The eighth was announced in June 2022: Klaus Mäkelä joined as artistic partner in 2022-23 season and will become chief conductor in 2027. The coming season sees five extraordinary programmes with Klaus Mäkelä at the helm.
