If you're looking for fabulous, English-language theatre in Amsterdam, the Queen's English Theatre Company (QETC) are bringing La Cage aux Folles to the CC Amstel theatre this November and December.
La Cage aux Folles is a laugh-a-minute, classic Broadway musical. It's camp and funny yet, at its heart, it is a tale of family, love and acceptance. Winner of 6 Tonys on its first outing and twice winner of Best Revival, it is also the source of both the much-recorded anthem I Am What I Am and the Hollywood film The Birdcage.
In the play, Jean-Michel is the son of Georges and his notorious, drag queen husband, Zaza. Pandemonium and farce ensue when Jean-Michel invites his bride-to-be's father, a right-wing, anti-gay politician to Saint Tropez to meet his unconventional parents.
Barrie Stevens is a household name in the Netherlands from his many TV roles and his work as a choreographer. He is, without a doubt, the most famous, gay Englishman in the Netherlands! For over 60 years he has been flying the rainbow flag and was one half of perhaps the world’s first ever openly gay celebrity couple!
In a possibly unexpected twist, Barrie will play the right-wing politician Dindon, who wants to close down gay clubs and drag venues.
The show is playing several dates in Amsterdam, both in the evening and afternoon matinees, so it's easy to find a showing that fits your schedule:
The expected running time of La Cage is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. The doors open 45 minutes before curtain-up so that you can relax in the comfortable bar before the show. Don't forget to pre-order your interval drinks to avoid the queue at the bar!
QETC are a much loved and respected theatre group in Amsterdam, and their shows often sell out. Make sure to book your tickets now so you don't miss out!
