On Friday, January 19, 2024, Myung-whun Chung takes to the stage in Amsterdam as he conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra performing the monumental Seventh Symphony by Bruckner. Get your tickets now!

Enjoy hearing music of Bruckner at the Concertgebouw

The orchestra eagerly anticipates playing Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony under the direction of the orchestra's long-time guest conductor Myung-whun Chung. The music reveals a grandiose play of light and darkness, from stately ecstasy to devilish outbursts.

Bruckner’s symphonies always have an unmistakably spiritual connotation. His Seventh Symphony sounds like a state of religious rapture. Here, Bruckner shows that he doesn’t always express himself in massive blocks of sound but can also compose with chamber-music-like clarity. This work had a special place in the composer’s heart because it finally brought him widespread recognition after years of being slammed by the critics.

Myung-whun Chung conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra

Myung-whun Chung has been one of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s favourite guest conductors for 40 years. Although he is considered one of the world’s top Bruckner conductors, he has only conducted a Bruckner symphony with the Concertgebouw Orchestra once before, the sixth, in 2008. So, it’s high time he has a chance to wield his baton in the massive Seventh Symphony.

Concertgebouw Orchestra Bruckner

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was founded in 1888. Its distinctive sound has made it one of the world’s leading orchestras.

The orchestra is famous for its renditions of works by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Anton Bruckner, and for its long-standing concert traditions such as the St Matthew Passion in the week before Easter and the Christmas Matinee. It has always worked closely with contemporary composers.

The Concertgebouw Orchestra has had just seven chief conductors to date. The eighth has been announced: Klaus Mäkelä will become chief conductor in 2027. The coming season sees five extraordinary programmes with Klaus Mäkelä at the helm.
