Work on Dutch railways to cause train disruptions around Schiphol from March 12

By Simone Jacobs
Mar 12, 2025

Dutch rail operator ProRail has announced that there will be fewer trains running to, via and from Schiphol Airport from March 12 until March 26 due to work taking place to renew the tracks. There will also be disruptions to the normal schedule for several trains in Noord Holland, so passengers should keep an eye on the travel planner.

Fewer trains around Schiphol and Amsterdam

For 15 days, there will be a limited number of available tracks causing disruptions to the train schedule around Schiphol Airport. ProRail is renewing the tracks in the Schiphol rail tunnel and replacing them with new tracks that have a longer lifespan requiring less maintenance.

From March 15 to 23, there will also be fewer trains running from other stations in Amsterdam, including Amsterdam Zuid and Amsterdam RAI stations. Travellers are urged to take crowds into consideration, plan journeys ahead of time, and to travel outside of rush hour as much as possible, especially when travelling between Amsterdam and Utrecht and Almere.

Major Dutch rail disruptions in 2025

The upcoming rail disruptions are not the first and will not be the last for people using public transport in 2025. Earlier this year, ProRail warned that there would be major disruptions throughout the year as planned railworks take place.

Currently, there are also no trains running between Alkmaar and Den Helder until March 23 as Den Helder Station is renovated. Long-term construction is also taking place around Groningen, affecting train traffic around the city until August 24 at the earliest.
