[Video] Mesmerising colourised historical footage of Utrecht

By Victoria Séveno

In towns and cities across the Netherlands, everywhere you look you’re reminded of the extensive and rich history of the country. In some areas, the gorgeous architecture and hoards of bikes can allow you to imagine what the country must have been like way back in the good old days.

Everyone always goes on about Amsterdam and its vibrant history, but there is so much more to the Netherlands than just its capital. Let’s explore what the beloved city of Utrecht looked like over 100 years ago!

City scenes of 1917 Utrecht

Utrecht is still the home of the annual Jaarbeurs fair, but the very first one took place on February 26, 1917, in a very different city. The fair was founded to promote national and international trade and industry, and is still grounded in these ideals, albeit with a modern twist that looks towards sustainable innovation.

In the video below, you can get a glimpse of what Utrecht was like at that pivotal moment in the city’s history. See any spots you recognise?

Did Utrecht look just as you had imagined it? Do you think it's changed much?
