The Netherlands may be a small country, and Dutch may be a relatively obscure language, but surprisingly enough it pops up time and time again in popular culture. Whether Amsterdam is the scene for blockbuster film The Hitman’s Bodyguard, or a Dutch diplomat is investigating a serial killer in The Serpent, it would seem as though the country and the language aren’t quite as obscure as you may have thought.
A number of films and series on Netflix feature scenes in which characters speak Dutch, and luckily the Youtube channel for the streaming service in the Netherlands and Belgium put together a fun little compilation of actors (trying to) speak Dutch in American shows and movies.
The accents and pronunciation may not always be particularly convincing, but hey, Dutch can be a tricky language to learn (as many of us already know). How many of the clips from the video below do you recognise?
