The Dutch food industry certainly had something to celebrate this week, after 17 restaurants across the Netherlands received their first Michelin star, and another four restaurants were awarded a Michelin Green Star for their commitment to sustainability.

18 Dutch restaurants celebrate new Michelin stars

Monday saw Michelin officially announce the restaurants that made it into the Michelin 2023 guide, and while once again no new three-star restaurants were added to the list, the Netherlands still managed to perform significantly better than in 2022 and 2021

There might not be any new three-star restaurants this year, but one establishment in Amsterdam was able to add a second star to its belt. Chef Jurgen van der Zalm at Restaurant Vinkeles was praised for “adding some modern twists” to dishes which “grab the attention” and are “always delivered with classic finesse”.

The Netherlands home to 125 Michelin-star restaurants

As of this week, the Netherlands is home to 17 new Michelin-star restaurants, several of which are located in Maastricht, Amsterdam and Utrecht. Meanwhile, four restaurants, including Rotonde in Rotterdam, received the Michelin Green Star. This special award is designed to celebrate establishments which “demonstrate so clearly their commitment to sustainable gastronomy.”

According to the Michelin 2023 guide, there are now 103 one-star restaurants, 20 two-star restaurants (down from 21 in 2022), and two three-star restaurants, bringing the Netherlands’ total to 125. The country also has 15 Michelin Green Star restaurants.
