Hail, thunderstorms and strong winds have cancelled at least 180 flights and a number of high-speed train connections across the country. The wet weather is expected to last until April 17.

Schiphol flights cancelled as strong winds hit Amsterdam

90 round trip flights were cancelled out of Schiphol, many of them being operated by KLM, but also other European flights operated by EasyJet, Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France have also been cancelled. Details of cancelled and delayed flights can be found on the website of the airport.

207 departing flights also face delays, as well as 186 arrivals that cannot land on time. Weather experts predict that the wind speeds could reach between 75 and 100 kilometres per hour.

Strong winds also cancel trains and restrict trucks from driving

The strong winds have also led to several high-speed trains being cancelled between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, as well as a number of accidents on busy roads across the country. High-speed trains are not expected to return to service until at least 3pm on Tuesday, according to a statement from NS.

Trucks and vehicles with trailers have been temporarily forbidden from driving along the Markerwaarddijk, a section of the N307 because of the high winds. The truck and trailer traffic was also hindered between Lelystad and Enkhuizen because of the weather conditions.
