Update: Since the time of writing, the WHO has updated its advice on ibuprofen: "Based on currently available information, WHO does not recommend against the use of ibuprofen."

According to pharmacists and the medicine authority CBG, patients with coronavirus should take paracetamol and not ibuprofen to tackle the symptoms of the virus.

Ibuprofen can cause unwanted side effects

Whilst some claim that ibuprofen can impair the immune system’s response, there is not enough evidence to support this. There is, however, another reason to avoid taking ibuprofen: its side effects. Ibuprofen increases the risk of gastric bleeding and kidney damage. Moreover, its interaction with other medicines can cause unwanted side effects as well.

Paracetamol, on the other hand, has the least side effects and sufficiently helps tackle things like fever and headache. CBG also advises taking paracetamol instead of ibuprofen, especially if you suffer from cardiovascular diseases or gastrointestinal problems.

Is there any paracetamol left?

Since the government measures were announced, people have been stockpiling paracetamol like crazy- something which is absolutely not necessary. There is plenty of paracetamol in stock at wholesalers. Pharmacists association KNMP is calling on people to stop hoarding it. Having one packet at home is enough.
