Oldest videos of Amsterdam by Dutch filmmaker now online

By Benjamin Garstka

The EYE Film Museum has recently released the results of their Breng Amsterdam in Beeld (Amsterdam in the Picture) project online!

Made possible by 17.000 euros raised during a crowdfunding campaign, the films are from the EYE’s private archive. Not included in previous projects, the films have now been cleaned, preserved, repaired and digitized, thereby making it possible to finally put copies online.

The films released include Oudste beelden Amsterdam from 1900 by Franz Anton Nöggerath Sr., a collection of the first four videos made of Amsterdam by a Dutch filmmaker, and Beautiful Amsterdam, a short city promotional film by Alex Benno from 1927.

The last two clips, Alarm Brand and Oudjes, are sound films from the 1930s about the Amsterdam fire department and two residents who fall in love in an elderly home, respectively.
