Things are about to heat up in the Netherlands as temperatures reach a sultry 39 degrees celsius this week. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code yellow weather warning for persistent high temperatures, and the national heat plan has been put into effect.

Code Yellow heat warning for the Netherlands from Monday

A code yellow weather warning has been issued for the whole of the Netherlands as persistent heat arrives in the country. The warning is bumped up to a code orange from Tuesday, especially for the southeast provinces of Limburg, Noord-Brabant and Gelderland. From 10am on Monday, June 30 to 8pm on Wednesday, July 2, residents are urged to avoid overheating and dehydration, especially those with vulnerable health conditions, by not overly exerting themselves, seeking shade and drinking enough water.

With temperatures expected to reach a high of 39 degrees in some Dutch cities, the national heat plan is also in effect, focusing on supporting vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, and people with chronic conditions, during periods of persistent heat to prevent health problems.

Tropical Dutch weather to last until Wednesday

Dutch beaches will see many visitors this week as Monday kicks off days of tropical heat with a high UV index and temperatures of up to 32 degrees celsius. This is just the beginning, as things are expected to heat up even further on Tuesday.

According to Weeronline, the second day of the week will see the mercury rise to between 35 and 37 degrees in Brabant, Limburg and Gelderland. People living in other provinces may experience slightly lower temperatures, but it will still be sweltering and humid, with temperatures remaining above 30 degrees.

Wednesday will continue the pattern, with the mercury rising above 30 degrees early in the day. While heavy showers are expected in the afternoon, inland areas can expect temperatures to reach 38 or 39 degrees before things cool down in the evening.

The rest of the week is expected to be cooler, but changeable, with long sunny periods interspersed with showers.
