Currently, the code orange storm that was predicted earlier this week, is wreaking more havoc than expected. In fact, it has now been categorised as a code red storm. Accidents are happening all over the country, and people are being advised to stay indoors if they can.

Public transport

The heavy wind gusts are causing major problems for public transport in the Netherlands. Trees and other objects are being blown onto the train tracks and are even colliding with the trains, causing dangerous situations. Therefore, NS and ProRail have decided to cancel all trains for now.

If you are planning to travel by train later today, please check the NS app for the latest updates.

Are you in Amsterdam at the moment? Please note, all tram traffic has come to a halt and metro station Van der Madeweg is closed. Check GVB for the latest news.

Chaos on the roads

Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) is asking people to postpone their journeys for safety reasons. Various motorways and roads have been closed. Reports are coming in of trucks and buses being blown over.

Schiphol

All flights from Schiphol were cancelled earlier today, however, Schiphol reports that traffic will gradually restart from 12:00. For up-to-date information about your flight, Schiphol advises to check their app or to contact your airline.

Major damage

The storm of January 3, the first major storm of the year, caused almost 10 million euros of damage. A spokesman for Verbond van Verzekeraars says this storm will most likely top that number. Reports are still pouring in of all the damage the storm is causing, so this number may still rise.
