Public transport in Amsterdam will be free for children until 2025 when travelling with an adult between 9am and 9pm. From July 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, public transport in Amsterdam will become completely free for children aged four to 11.
The Dutch capital is offering free travel for children following its initiative in 2023, during which almost 17.000 children took advantage of the promotion and took almost one million free rides public transport. The free tickets were proposed to help parents with children during the height of the cost of living crisis.
“It is great that we can offer Amsterdammers another period of free public transport. Last year, I heard stories from children all over the city who travelled to where they would normally not go,” PvdA council member Farley Asruf said. “And it’s a financial advantage for parents, so they do not feel any pressure when planning outings or trips,” Asruf added.
Parents and guardians of children aged 4 to 11 will be able to apply for free travel from July 1. The free subscription will be applied to a personalised OV-Chipkaart, and each child must also have their own personalised card in order to claim free travel.
After the travel subscription is loaded onto the card, parents will be able to bring their child on public transport with them for free.
