About Eastwards

Eastwards is a cultural foundation acting as a platform for contemporary Eastern European arts and culture. It has been functioning as an informal group since 2015, growing steadily with the help of a small highly-enthusiastic team until 2018, when the initiative was registered as a foundation under Stichting Eastwards. Our programme includes cultural events such as festivals, exhibitions, film screenings, creative workshops, debates and other activities in the field of contemporary art and culture. For instance, our On Tour film nights showcase Eastern European film around The Netherlands. We are also currently setting up an Alliance for small film and culture festivals, an initiative focused on exchanging knowledge and creating a support network.

Our biggest project, however, is Spotlight: Romania Film Festival. The festival started in 2015 and offers a fresh and vibrant take on contemporary Eastern European Culture. Each year it combines cinema with a new discipline or theme, exploring how different mediums complement each other in order to create an exciting experience for the festival-goers. We have combined film with documentary photography (2015), with contemporary music (2016) and with experimental video art (2017), while in 2018 the festival centred around the theme of Celebration in the context of the Romanian Centennial. This year the theme will be Film and Identity, highlighting the complexity of identity processes through fun activities including a food truck, a jam session, a public debate and naturally a wide range of new films.
