The newly renovated rooftop garden on top of the NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam has been unveiled as a gift to the Dutch capital to celebrate its 750th birthday. As of May 23, the public can visit Amsterdam’s highest rooftop garden for free.
Rooftop garden at NEMO Science Museum open to public
On Thursday, May 22, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema officially opened the renovated rooftop garden. From Friday, anyone can head to the roof of the museum in Amsterdam and discover the greenery and innovation of the new garden for free.
There are 75 types of flowers and plants on the rooftop, functioning as a natural ecosystem for birds and insects. The roof slopes downwards with plants needing the least water at the top and the most water at the bottom.
“With this innovative and versatile roof square, we offer a creative place where everyone is welcome and where meeting, connecting and understanding science and technology are central. And where you can, of course, enjoy the most beautiful view of Amsterdam,” said Géke Roelink, NEMO Science Museum general manager, in a press release. The rooftop is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm and is open until 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays during the summer months.
Activities on NEMO Science Museum rooftop
Visitors will not only be able to get a view of Amsterdam from the highest rooftop garden in the city, but there are also many things to discover, learn and measure. From studying clouds and stars to spotting birds and measuring the wind, the rooftop garden is a way to get closer to nature while also diving into science and technology.
While the greenery “contributes to biodiversity and liveability in the city”, the rooftop will also be a meeting point for events and activities. Taking part in Toekomst10daagse, there will be a roof festival on top of the NEMO Science Museum in June with a jam-packed programme. There will be morning raves, summer experiments, theatre performances, art installations and more.
