Controversial CoronaMelder one of the top apps in 2020

Apple has revealed the top apps in the Netherlands from the past 12 months, with Microsoft Teams and the controversial (and heavily delayed) CoronaMelder nabbing the top spots.

The Netherlands’ favourite apps

Some social media apps are staples on almost everybody’s phone, and so unsurprisingly secure spots in the top 15 apps of 2020. However, the ongoing coronavirus crisis has undoubtedly left its mark on everything this year, including the apps everyone decided to download.

The fact that Microsoft Teams claimed the top spot is relatively unsurprising, as the app offers businesses a networking hub which allows employees to do everything via one central platform. Similarly, when CoronaMelder launched in October, millions were quick to download it, in spite of privacy concerns. As of December 29, over 4,3 million people have the app on their phones.

Video conferencing apps such as Zoom and House Party experienced a real boom in the spring of this year, with Zoom dominating throughout 2020. After a privacy scandal earlier this year, House Party became less popular, but still did enough to nab a spot in the top 10.

Another notable addition to this year’s list is Widgetsmith, an app which became extremely popular after Apple introduced iOS 14, which featured the ability to add customisable widgets to your iPhone’s home screen.
