In the near future there will be 500 trained policemen on the streets of the Netherlands protecting its animals.

According to The Guardian, the first 125 animal police officers - trained for handling animal issues - will be on duty until the end of this year and will take care a series of issues ranging from pets not being taken to the veterinarian when needed to physical abuse.

Since 60 percent of the Dutch population rank animal welfare as highly important, the animal police should be respected and appreciated. However, concerns that animal issues will "steal the thunder" from other important issues have also risen. The police chief of Amsterdam has humorously referred to the new force “guinea pig police” but committed to take the new assignment seriously.

The proposal comes from The Party for the Animals (PvdD) - the first of its kind in the world - and Geert Wilders' Party for Freedom (PVV).
