Number of millionaires in the Netherlands rises for 7th year in a row

In spite of the wide-scale impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the rising cost of living, the latest figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) show that in 2020, the number of millionaires living in the Netherlands rose for the seventh consecutive year.

Number of Dutch millionaires rises to 317.000

At the start of 2020, 278.000 households in the Netherlands had assets of at least 1 million euros. By January 1, 2021, this figure had risen to 317.000, marking the seventh year in a row that the country had seen an increase in the number of recorded millionaires.

Once again, these 317.000 households had an average capital of 1,6 million euros each, which includes the value of property owned and lived in minus any mortgage debt they may have. In comparison, the average non-millionaire household in the Netherlands has an average capital of 75.000 euros. Around a quarter of the Dutch millionaires were worth between 2 and 5 million euros at the start of 2021, while three percent were worth more than 10 million euros.

Wealthiest municipalities are Bloemendaal and Laren

According to CBS, two-thirds of millionaires with jobs are self-employed, with many working in the agricultural sector, or in financial services or real estate. Interestingly, more than a third of Dutch millionaires are already retired, while 22 percent are employed by someone.

The data shows that most millionaire households live in Bloemendaal or Laren - this is largely unsurprising, as these municipalities are known for their wealth and high property prices. In Bloemendaal and Laren, around three in every 10 people are millionaires.
