A new train line will open in two years, directly connecting The Hague with Brussels.
The connection was formalised by a declaration of intent, signed June 20 by Arriva, Brussels Airport and the Municipality of The Hague. It is planned to open in December 2015.
This intercity service will complement the already well-serviced train lines of both countries, as well as the extensive network of European-wide connections. It will be operated by the private company Arriva, and will be called the "Lage Landenlijn" (Lowlands Line).
When NS high-speed Fyra trains were introduced in December 2012, The Hague found itself isolated as they don’t stop there. The city’s municipality instantly launched an urgent appeal.
In February this year, The Hague found financial support in Aviva, as well as Brussels Airport (which will be serviced by the line).
The Lage Landenlijn will run hourly from The Hague’s Cantral Station to Brussels-South. It will make stops en route at Delft, Rotterdam and Antwerp, among others.
The planned development should satisfy all parties, as it opens a direct link between the Dutch parliament and the Belgian and European seats of government.
Tickets will cost the same as those for a standard intercity train.
