Illegal immigrants to be targeted by police

By James Shaw

The Dutch police force has decided to get tough on illegal immigration, at the request of the government. The Aliens Police has agreed to increase its transfer of illegal immigrants to the Repatriation and Departure Service by 10 percent, up to 4.800.

The measure came after negotiations between the Minister of Security and Justice Ivo Opstelten, Minister for Immigration, Integration and Asylum Policy Gerd Leers and Chief Constable Leon Kuijs (Chair of the Board of Chief Constables).

The police intend to focus on illegal immigrants who engage in criminal activity. It will also target failed asylum seekers and those without a residence permit. However, the police will consider personal circumstances; minors, the elderly and infirm, and victims of human trafficking will receive greater assistance.
