The Dutch supreme court ruled that the Bergermeer project - part of a plan to make the Netherlands a European hub for storing natural gas along with the liquefied natural gas terminal in Rotterdam - must be temporarily suspended, even though it has been approved by the Dutch government.

The 800 million euros project, which would be one of the largest gas storages in Europe, could bring serious seismic hazard to the surrounding municipalities, according to numerous scientific reports.

However, note that:
› the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research
› the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute
› the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
were asked by TAQA, subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company and part of the Bergermeer project consortium, to carry out additional tests, and concluded that the risk of tremor is small.
