Storms and rain head for the Netherlands as sun sets on Tuesday

After several weeks of sunny weather and high temperatures, the Netherlands is set to be bathed in rain from Tuesday afternoon onwards. Various Dutch cities are expected to see scattered thunderstorms and lightning throughout the afternoon and evening.

Thunder and rain coming to the Netherlands on May 14

According to current forecasts from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), the Netherlands can expect warm and sunny weather throughout Tuesday until later in the afternoon, when thunderstorms and sharp showers are likely to occur in many regions. The wind is also picking up as the rain rolls in, especially around the Wadden Islands and Ijsselmeer.

Temperatures will rise to 26 degrees celsius across some parts of the Netherlands, though the weather is expected to be cooler in Zeeland, and temperatures will fall as the rain begins to wash over the country. Despite this, the sun’s UV index for the day is still extremely high, so those spending time outside should make sure to use plenty of sun cream.

North and East of the Netherlands may escape the thunderstorms

Overnight between May 14 and 15 the storms are set to continue through the south, centre and west of the country, though the north and east could escape the storms and enjoy a dry night. Wednesday will remain warm, before temperatures cool for the remainder of the week, with highs of around 19 degrees.

The rain will also persist for the coming days, so those seeking the sun should make the most of the last few hours of sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecasts for the following week show that the weather will be characterised mostly by rain showers and sunny spells, with plenty of cooler days to help those struggling in the heat!
