The Dom Tower in Utrecht has finally started to reveal its new look to the city, as the scaffolding around the tower is slowly removed. Though the work is not set to be complete until the end of summer 2024, the city is already hosting a concert at 2pm on March 25 to celebrate the completion of restoration work on the top section of the building.

Dom Tower concert will be held on Monday, March 25

The event will be held on Monday, March 25 and will include a performance by local carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig. Fiebig’s set list includes a number of “Utrecht songs” such as 'City Song of Utrecht', 'The Lonely Tower' and 'When I stand on top of the Dom', as well as classical songs and pop tunes like 'Simply the best' by Tina Turner.

Councillor Dennis de Vries is looking forward to the moment, he said in a press release from the Gemeente Utrecht: “The lantern [at the top] is a special part of the Dom Tower. Not only because of the beautiful sculpture that has been restored with great attention. This is the first part that Utrecht residents see. That point you look for when you cycle through the city or come home from holiday. The fact that we now have that back is of course worth celebrating!”

Utrecht Dom tower restoration has been taking place since 2019

As many Utrecht residents will know, the restorations of the city’s beloved tower have taken quite some time to complete. The tower, which was previously part of the city’s Domkerk cathedral until a storm in 1674, has some sections that are almost 700 years old and therefore has required major restoration work as part of the project. The remaining scaffolding on the tower is set to be removed by the end of summer 2024.
