According to a study made on behalf of the University of Groningen (RUG) and Groningen police, an average student lives a much "quieter" life than expected.

On average, students' alcohol consumption during a normal week:
› 10 glasses per student
› 16 glasses for men and 6 for women
› 21 glasses for members of student organisations

The study was conducted during the academic year 2009 / 2010 and approximately 1.000 first year students were asked about alcohol consumption, drug use and experiences regarding unprotected sex, violence and crime. The survey also revealed low levels of aggression, crime and use of hard drugs.
