Banksy’s The Whitehouse Rat went on sale this week in Zwolle, where it raised 380.000 euros at auction.
The artwork is Banksy’s largest piece, measuring three by three and a half metres. He created The Whitehouse Rat back in 2014, and for years it could be spotted on a wall of the former The White House pub in Liverpool, where the entire piece measured a whopping nine and a half by six metres.
For the auction, only the rat’s head was preserved and sold. Even significantly reduced, the artwork weighed around 500 kilos and presented the Zwolle auctioneer with significant difficulty when it came to transporting it safely.
The sale of The Whitehouse Rat marks only the third time that one of the renowned street artist’s works have gone up for sale here in the Netherlands. The artwork was purchased by an Englishman, so will likely now have to make the journey back across the channel.
