Enormous bicycle storage facility opens in Utrecht

By Mina Solanki

In August the first section of the long-anticipated, record-breaking underground bicycle shelter, which has been under construction since 2014, will be opened in Utrecht.

Dizzyingly big

Cycling is a common form of transport in the Netherlands; however, finding a space to park can sometimes be problematic.

The bicycle storage facility in Utrecht fulfils this need. It is the result of a partnership between the municipality of Utrecht, NS and ProRail, and is set to house 12.500 bicycles in 2018. It can currently accommodate around 6.000, and this will increase to 7.500 by the end of this year.

You can already park your bike at the shelter situated under Utrecht central station on the Jaarbeurs side; however, it will be officially opened on August 21.

Gadgets and gizmos

Consisting of three levels the bicycle parking facility will be fitted with digital signs indicating the number of spaces free per row and level. These numbers will also be visible on signs throughout the city and on an app.
