[UvA] Press release
At approximately 08.15 on Friday, August 19, a fire broke out on the 9th and 10th floors of building C (stretching across the Nieuwe Achtergracht) on the Roetersstraat. It subsequently spread to the roof. The fire in the vacant building occurred as a result of demolition work taking place due to the redevelopment of the Roeterseiland complex. The fire brigade arrived on site quickly. The fire was declared under control at 09.20.

According to the fire brigade, there was no danger posed to residents or employees. The asbestos removal in the building where the fire took place had already been completed. It was 10.30 before the fire was completely extinguished.

The demolition and construction activities on the Roetersstraat commenced again in the course of morning, after the fire brigade and the Environmental and Building Department had carried out "‹"‹several measurements (structural integrity and stability, asbestos and toxic substances).

The planned teaching activities in building A will go ahead as scheduled. This also applies to the relocation of the Psychology department from building A to the Diamond Exchange building (Diamantbeurs).
