This month, New York City and Amsterdam announced a City-to-City partnership.

The scheme was officially signed on July 10 by the CEOs of NYC & Company and Amsterdam Marketing. It aims to increase tourism between the two destinations by means of social media, as well as press and consumer promotions.

Metropolitan friendship

The partnership marks an important development in what has come to be a significant trans-Atlantic allegiance.

The contact between Amsterdam and New York has become particularly prominent in the last half decade.

In 2009, the Prince of Orange and Princess Maxima visited New York as part of a tour celebrating Amsterdam’s own history. This visit highlighted many of the important historical and symbolic links between the cities.

Powerful business

Studies show that Americans make an average of one million hotel stays per annum in the Dutch capital. New York is similarly popular, with almost 55% of Dutch visitors to America visiting the Big Apple.

This campaign wants to ensure the cities are making the most of the huge potential of these visitors.

Accordingly, it seeks to highlight all of the cultural or crazy things on offer for tourists in each city. Particuarly in terms of nightlife and culture, Amsterdam and New York remain two of the global leaders.

Unsurprisingly, both Amsterdam Marketing and NYC & Company agree that a link between the two cities could only bolster their global prominence.

Financial support

The City-to-City cheme is receiving financial support from high-profile companies such as KLM, one of Europe’s leading airlines.

KLM will be organising promotions and umbrella campaigns in order to get the promotion off the ground. The hope is that this alliance will lead not only to increased tourism, but also to stronger economies and even greater reputations for both cities.
