5 reasons why you should move to Rotterdam

Rotterdam, also known as the “Gateway to Europe”, is the top hotspot for expats looking to live in the Netherlands. With so many wonderfully unique qualities, it is easy to see why the Netherlands’ second largest city attracts so many people every year. What also makes this city an international hotspot is the fact that Rotterdam has the largest working port in Europe!

1. A city of progress

Rotterdam is a lively and innovative city with many modern and unique buildings creating a truly spectacular skyline. A large part of the city was destroyed by bombings during WWII. After the war, the city was reconstructed. New structures were created permanently, changing Rotterdam into the modern city it has since remained.

Famous landmarks include the Euromast Observation Tower and the Erasmus Bridge. The city is also famous for its “cube homes” (“Kubuswoningen”), built in 1982 by the architect Piet Blom.

In 2014, Rotterdam opened Markthal, the first indoor market in the Netherlands: An impressive building of 120 metres wide and 40 metres high. In addition to the grand size of Markthal, a beautiful piece of art decorates the interior of the building, illustrating large fruit, flowers, vegetables and insects. Portraying a cornucopia from an ancient city, the ‘Horn of Plenty’ 3D art piece has become a big draw and has received a lot of global attention since its creation.

2. Learn the nicknames

You’ll find that the locals have nicknames for many landmarks in the city. It’s a good idea to find out what these are when you arrive. Some of our favourites are the “Swan Neck” for the Erasmus Bridge and for the Central Station “Station Kapsalon”. This name comes from the famous Rotterdam snack of kebab, chips and melted cheese, served in a tin foil box.

3. International city

Rotterdam has also become a top international city, with a large number of multinational companies placing their headquarters there, companies such as Proctor & Gamble and Unilever. This has helped make the city the international hub that it is, drawing in many international job seekers.

Rotterdam’s Erasmus University, one of the top-ranking business schools, also has many international students, as well as Dutch, joining every year.

4. Diverse Rotterdam neighbourhoods

You will also find a choice of neighbourhoods to move to, depending on your preferences.

The Ommoord and Zevenkamp neighbourhoods are home to many expat families. You’ll find plenty of playgrounds and a peaceful atmosphere for you and your family there.

The Maritime Quarter has a more exclusive vibe to it, with many luxury apartments and restaurants, all offering great views overlooking the Maas River.

Kop van Zuid is a newer neighbourhood that is already attracting many business professionals and expats. Alternatively, there is the creative hub that is Oude Westen, a culturally diverse part of Rotterdam attracting many entrepreneurs and artists.

5. City pride

So, as you can see, there is plenty to look forward to with a move to Rotterdam! It's no surprise that those living in Rotterdam are so proud of their city. Do you live in Rotterdam? What are you proud of? Let us know in the comments!
