Recently, expats in the Netherlands reported that, while the country wasn’t always a great place to live, it offered a great environment for working. Now, another ranking has backed up these reviews, ranking the Dutch capital as the ninth-best city in the world to work in as a European.

Intelligence Group's European Talent Intelligence Manual 2022

The market research company Intelligence Group recently published its European Talent Intelligence Manual 2022. As part of the report, the Rotterdam-based company analysed the professional experiences and motivations of almost 100.000 Europeans in order to determine the most popular city for doing business in.

Over 600 cities were included in this year’s study, which saw New York drop from the top spot as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and political climate in the United States. Interestingly, Brexit doesn’t appear to have dampened the popularity of London, which rose from second to first place.

Amsterdam one of the top 10 cities in the world for work

Intelligence Group found that Amsterdam was especially favoured amongst younger workers under the age of 35, and those looking for jobs in finance, IT, or administration. The Dutch capital also appears to be particularly popular amongst workers from Poland, Greece and Slovenia, while those from Latvia, France and Sweden weren’t all too keen on the city.

While Amsterdam managed to secure a place in the top 10, it wasn’t the only Dutch city featured in the report. Rotterdam and The Hague also received positive feedback from those involved in the study, both scoring places in the top 100 (79th and 90th respectively).

The Dutch people surveyed as part of the study agreed with the overall consensus that London seemed like a pretty great place to live and work, followed by Barcelona in second place and New York in third. It appears as though many Dutch agree that life in southern Europe looks rather attractive, with Madrid, Rome and Lisbon all also nabbing places in the top 10.

Top 10 cities in the world in which to work

According to the 2022 ranking, Europeans said the following 10 cities have the best working environments:

  1. London
  2. New York
  3. Paris
  4. Berlin
  5. Barcelona
  6. Madrid
  7. Sydney
  8. Rome
  9. Amsterdam
  10. Vienna
