Museums in Maastricht

The Museum aan het Vrijthof focuses on history, art and antiques, located on the most famous square in Maastricht. It opened in the mid-20th century, though the building is centuries older. The museum is located in one of the oldest non-religious buildings in Maastricht, the so-called Spanish Government Building, a building which acquired its name in the 16th century.

The Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht is the foremost museum of fine art in the province of Limburg. It was founded in 1884, with many gems of 17th-century Dutch, Flemish and Italian painting, as well as contemporary art. The name derives from the French "bons enfants" meaning good children, which was the name of a former convent in which the museum was resident for some years in the 20th century.

Bureau Europa is a museum in Maastricht related to architecture and urbanism. It hosts not just exhibitions, but also workshops, city tours and lectures in the fields of architecture, urbanism and design. Bureau Europa was founded in 2006 and aims to convey narratives about our cities and surroundings.

The Natural History Museum Maastricht holds more than 550.000 natural objects, while its collections comprise more than 11.000 species, including over 1.000 type specimens. Located in a former monastery near a botanical garden in the historical Jeker Quarter, the museum is dedicated to geology, palaeontology and flora and fauna of South Limburg.
