Museums in Groningen

The GRID Graphic Museum (GRID Grafisch Museum Groningen) is a museum devoted to the history of graphic design, printing and bookbinding. Graphic heritage comes alive in GRID, with novel ways of exhibiting graphic ingenuity. Visitors can marvel at historic printing presses and bookbinding devices and children and adults can take part in fascinating workshops.

The Groningen University Museum is celebrated for its scientific collection of the University of Groningen. There are also many artefacts relating to the history of the university itself, such as clothing, posters and photographs, as well as devices used for research and lecturing. The museum prides itself on providing an in-depth insight into the history of one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands.

The Groninger Museum is an art museum which has managed to build an extensive and extremely varied collection ever since it was established in 1874. Its temporary exhibitions are as varied as they are prolific. Recent examples include exhibitions dedicated to David Bowie, Auguste Rodin, Ilya Repin, Cuban art and Nordic art.

The Museum aan de A used to be the Northern Maritime Museum (Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum), one of the most visited museums in the province of Groningen. It has now been relaunched and revitalised as a museum about the history of the city and province of Groningen, with a focus on the lives of (extra)ordinary Groningen residents. Situated in two beautiful historic buildings, it shows the history of Groningen, its successes and failures, and also hosts a variety of exhibitions, talks, dances and workshops.
