Cinemas & movie theatres in the Netherlands

At Cinecenter, an intimate and cozy arthouse movie theatre in the center of Amsterdam, they screen a wide range of independent movies and documentaries. For expats and tourists, they offer a selection of recent foreign language films with English subtitles. 

De Balie is the Netherlands’ foremost venue for contemporary arts, politics and culture. 

De Uitkijk, an iconic 1920s arthouse movie theatre in Amsterdam, offers a good film selection, often with English subtitles. 

This national museum for film, located on Amsterdam’s IJ harbour, manages more than 55,000 films from all genres. Visitors are welcome in four cinemas, an exhibition space, a floor dedicated to educational activities, a shop, and a bar-restaurant.

Both the better films from Hollywood and award-winning films from Europe and the rest of the world are shown at De Filmhallen. With 9 screens, it's one of the bigger cinemas in the city. 

Filmhuis Cavia has been showing special non-profit films on a minimal budget at a special location in Amsterdam for more than 40 years. With only 40 seats, they are one of the smallest cinemas in the Netherlands, and the smallest in Amsterdam.

Rialto screens many splendid European and American films as well as unique gems from Latin America, Asia and Africa. The cinema offers various services especially for expats, such as foreign language films with English subtitles, English spoken films, and Expat Cinema Meet-Ups. 

Since March 29, 1999, Het Ketelhuis – firmly anchored in the Westergasfabriek – has been the home of Dutch film, a safe place for screenings of and debate about Dutch cinema. They also show arthouse titles of European origin and movies with English subtitles.

Kriterion is a film theatre and café that has been run exclusively by students since its foundation in 1945, mainly showing arthouse and foreign films. Some movies feature English subtitles. 

LAB111 is a quirky cult cinema located in a monumental old pathological anatomical laboratory in Amsterdam. From showing in-depth documentaries and modern classics to unconventional genre films, LAB111 aims to inspire and encourage reflection.

The iconic Melkweg in Amsterdam is not only a music venue, but also a cultural centre. Its cinema programming features classics, arthouse movies and concerts. 

One of the largest cinemas in the Netherlands, Pathé Arena is located near the famous Johan Cruijff ArenA football stadium. It features 14 screens, 4DX and IMAX. 

Situated in Amsterdam's city centre, near Leidscheplein, Pathé City offers a top movie-going experience. The cinema's 7 screens show the latest movies, as well as documentaries and the classics. 

Recently renovated, Pathé de Munt shows a wide variety of movies across 13 screens in the heart of Amsterdam. 

The best way to feel like a moviestar and experience the best service in style is to visit the Tuschinski Theatre. This magical cinema 'palace' opened in 1921 and it remains until today with its Art Deco interior one of the most cherished buildings in Amsterdam, hosting many premieres and events.

Studio/K is a cinema, café and restaurant in Amsterdam East, showing award-winning feature films, inspiring documentaries, obscure gems and forgotten classics. Some movies are shown with English subtitles. 

The Movies on the Haarlemmerdijk is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam and a household name for Amsterdammers. In addition to the monumental hall from 1912, the cinema consists of three other halls, all decorated in a classic art deco style. The Movies mainly shows arthouse films, documentaries and the better Hollywood productions.

Filmhuis Lumen hosts a special expat screening every Wednesday. Foreign language movies are subtitled in English, and after the movie you can stay for a good coffee or a special beer!  

Located in the heart of Delft, Pathé Delft offers 7 screens and a wide selection of the latest movies. 

NatLab is a historical and innovative landmark in Eindhoven. They offer a range of films and performing arts that are either in English or have English subtitles. Enjoy movies, theatre, and performances without worrying about language barriers!

Pathé Eindhoven offers six regular movie halls and two special ones with Dolby Digital 7.1 & IMAX Sound. It is located within walking distance from Eindhoven Central station. 

LAB-1 is a unique cinema in Europe that, in addition to officially accredited cinema halls and programming from cinema films, also has two professional event spaces, a dance club and bar, with optional outdoor space for open-air summer movies and presentations. 

Situated in the heart of Groningen, Forum stands out against the historic city centre like a modern monolith. Their cinema shows the newest releases with English subtitles every Wednesday and Sunday night, especially for their international visitors.

The smallest cinema in Groningen, RKZbios has distinguished itself for 40 years with its own unique, varied programming, consisting of mainly arthouse, classics and interesting Hollywood films. Each film is shown in its original language with Dutch subtitles.

VERA is thé center of underground Popculture in Groningen, or as they’d like to call it: Club for the International Pop Underground. Every week there are about 4 concerts and a movie night.

Kinepolis Groningen is located in the Euroborg Stadium and offers 10 screens, 1,758 comfortable seats and a wide film selection.

Kijkhuis in Leiden is a small-scale film theatre that focuses on arthouse films from various countries. Every Wednesday night, they show a movie with English subtitles as part of their Expat Cinema experience. 

Lido is an unmistakable element in Leiden's skyline on the Beestenmarkt. You will recognise Lido by its facade, its gigantic stained glass windows and, of course, its film selection. At the moment, Lido mainly shows commercial films.

The Trianon Theater is the oldest cinema in Leiden and shows films for the general public every day from 6 pm on 3 screens.

Showing more than 300 films per year, the true cinephile will get their money's worth at Lumière. Watch small independent films, or drop in to see that much-discussed Oscar winner. Lumière shows films in their original language, usually with Dutch subtitles. To answer the needs of their foreign visitors, they try to screen as many films and documentaries as possible with English subtitles as well.

Recently renovated, Vue Nijmegen offers 8 screens and a bar. Sit back in their comfortable chairs with footrest and table to watch the latest movies. 

With seven screens, a theatre, multifunctional studio and café, LUX is the largest arthouse in Europe. For people who don't speak Dutch, they offer movies with English subtitles.

With six screens, there is a new programme every week, full of the most beautiful films: Oscar winners, documentaries, classics, world cinema and children's films. With a program of non-Western and mainly European quality films, LantarenVenster shows a range that is usually not seen in regular cinemas.

Located next to the famous football stadium in Rotterdam, Pathé De Kuip is the largest cinema in the Netherlands, showing a wide range of movies on its 14 screens. 

Pathé Schouwburgplein is an architectonic beacon in the city center of Rotterdam. Every hall has a state of the art image and sound. The IMAX hall is a masterpiece for your movie experience. Pathé is easy to get to and you can park in the underground garage. Rotterdam Central Station is at walking distance and multiple trams stop right in front of the door.

Screening both arthouse and mainstream films, Cinerama is a popular cinema in the heart of Rotterdam.

Situated across the iconic Binnenhof, Pathé Buitenhof is located in a beautiful old building in the city center of The Hague. The cinema has six rooms and 1,400 seats.

If you fancy watching a movie after a day out at the beach, Pathé Scheveningen is the place to be. With 8 screens, including 4DX and Dolby Cinema, you will always find a movie that suits your mood. 

Spuimarkt is a large cinema in the city centre of The Hague, which opens early in the morning and closes late at night. Our IMAX-screen is incredibly large and with our laser projector and immersive sound system, you will be transported into the movie that you are watching. It’s a must! All in all: Pathé Spuimarkt is the place to be for a fun day/night out!

Dakota is located in the middle of the largest city district of The Hague: Escamp. There is plenty to do in and around the theater and film house. You can go to a theater performance, visit a movie or even follow workshops and lessons in their ArtLabs.

Cinecitta has always been a strong supporter of arthouse films, and they show gems from all over the world that often overshadow regular Hollywood releases. No blockbusters, but special films for people who do not go along with the crowd.

Pathé Tilburg is located in the heart of the city and consists of 7 screens, including 1 IMAX screen for the most intense film experience. Every auditorium also has luxurious top-seats, offering the perfect way to enjoy the film. Every Tuesday, tickets are available for only €5! (excl. surcharges).

Hoogt on Tour shows films at various locations in Utrecht. Some of them are accessible for those who don’t speak Dutch and are either English spoken or shown with English subtitles. 

The Louis Hartlooper Complex (LHC) is a cinema, cultural centre and catering facility, situated in a historic building in Utrecht. It offers a unique programme, showing rare arthouse movies as well as the more known films. 

Situated in the centre of Utrecht, by the Oudegracht, Pathé Rembrandt is easily accessible. The ideal place to watch your favourite movie in the heart of the city.

Springhaver is a cinema, café and restaurant in the heart of Utrecht. Their weekly film programme is interspersed with special events and film series. For expats and tourists alike, they show films with English subtitles. 

Ideally located near the Utrecht Centraal train station, Kinepolis Jaarbeurs features 14 screens with a total of 2988 comfortable seats. They show a wide variety of films, from blockbusters to arthouse.

Run by volunteers, Filmhuis Movie W offers a film theatre where a broad audience can enjoy special, striking, groundbreaking or comic films from all over the world.

Heerenstraat Theater is often called the cosiest and fun cinema in Wageningen. You can watch the best films while lying back in their comfortable sofas. Besides films, Heerenstraat also shows live operas, concerts and ballet on the big screen. 

KINO is a cinema in the centre of Rotterdam with six screens, a cocktail bar, NIKO's restaurant and creative workplace for the audiovisual industry (BURO) in the Gouvernestraat. 

The Chassé Theatre in Breda is a lively and ambitious organisation offering a wide range of theatre, music and film-based activities. For guests who don't speak Dutch, they have English or non-spoken shows and activities and English spoken or subtitled films.
