As well as having the distinction of being 400 years old, Groningen University also produced the first female student and first female lecturer in the Netherlands. Groningen Univeristy offers programmes in a full range of academic areas, including in specialist faculties for Philosophy, Medical Science and Spatial Sciences.

One of the oldest and largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen offers a wide range of study programmes, including those in Arts and Culture, Behaviour and Society, Business and Economics, and Exact and Information Sciences, among others.
