Two Postdoctoral positions in affective/decision neuroscience

We seek two highly talented and motivated postdoctoral researchers for a European Research Council (ERC) funded Consolidator project entitled Dare to Approach. The overarching aim of the project is to develop a computational framework explaining how people make costly avoidance decisions under acute threat, and how they are able to override strong avoidance tendencies to achieve a higher-order goal.


The project involves task development, computational modelling, and testing the models in healthy and highly anxious individuals. Besides making use of various brain imaging techniques (e.g. fMRI and MEG) to investigate the neural basis of approach-avoidance decisions, you will work on causal interventions using brain stimulation (TMS, tACS and DBS) and pharmacological interventions in healthy and patient samples. With this we aim to manipulate current psychophysiological states that may affect decision making under acute threat. Ultimately we want to contribute to a better understanding of the neurocognitive basis of passive and active avoidance in healthy and anxious individuals, and to provide starting points for personalised interventions to alleviate persistent avoidance in anxiety patients.


You should have a PhD degree in a field related to cognitive neuroscience (e.g. artificial intelligence, experimental psychology, cognitive science, biology, neuroscience). Candidates with a strong background in affective or decision neuroscience and experience with computational modelling are particularly encouraged to apply. Selection will be based on records of published research, expertise in affective neuroscience methods and theories, computational modelling and familiarity with neuroimaging techniques. You are expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment, sharing technical know-how and ideas.

Salary Benefits:

  • employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE
  • a maximum gross monthly salary of € 4,852 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 11)
  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • duration of the contract: 5 years maximum

  • you will be classified as a Postdoctoral Researcher, Level 3 in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO)
