PhD: DMS(P) production and carbon uptake by polar microalgae in a high-co2 world

Description:

- you will design and perform laboratory experiments with marine micro-algal cultures

- you will explore new techniques to measure carbon uptake and photosynthesis

- you will participate in one or two field seasons at Rothera Station, Western Antarctic Peninsula; at base, you will carry out field studies to collect samples and perform experiments both with sea-ice samples and seawater samples

- you will submit a thesis containing a minimum of 3 experimental publications as a first author.

Requirements:

- you have a MSc degree in marine biology, marine biogeochemistry, or related topic
- you are eager to spend 2-3 months in the Antarctic
- you are self supporting and well organized
- you are physically fit.

Salary Benefits:

The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,266 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,897 gross per month in the fourth year, based on a full-time position (1.0 FTE), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (cao NU), excluding a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual income and a 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.

You are based at the GELIFES centre of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and will become member of the Plant Ecophysiology group. It is a temporary assignment for a period of four years. First, you will get a temporary position of one year with the perspective of prolongation with another three years. Before the end of the first year, there will be an evaluation as to the feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years.
