Feeling lost as an expat business owner? Listen to your intuition

By Stephanie Ward
Jun 21, 2024

Sometimes as a small business owner, you feel lost in how you approach and market your services and don't have the answers. When you're feeling untethered, it seems logical to look outside of yourself for solutions. But even if someone claims to have the answers, there are always different options and paths for different people.

Every situation is unique

This is the philosophy that I've embraced throughout my business: there is no one-size-fits all or exact formula for success. Every business owner deserves a tailored approach to marketing their company that works for them. That is why this moment feels like the perfect time to share my thoughts about how to use your intuition in your business.

I thought about writing about this a long time ago but, at the time, my intuition guided me to a different topic. How's that for a meta example?

Trust your intuition

There is actually one person who does know what to do next in your business, and that person is you. You may not feel like you know what to do because everything feels so chaotic right now. But if you are quiet, and listen carefully, you can access your own intuition. This may work for you by meditating or taking a walk in the woods. Giving yourself some space to figure things out can help you as well.

The more attention and energy you give to nurturing this ability to hone in on your intuition, the more you will sharpen it and be able to access it smoothly. If the word intuition is too airy-fairy for you, try on the word "instinct" instead.

"Intuition does not come to an unprepared mind." ~Albert Einstein

Don't follow the pack

The point is to not always focus on what other business owners are doing, and to do what is right for you instead. If you need to go inward and take some time off, go ahead. If you're feeling motivated to create something brand new, then follow that whisper.

Or maybe you see a way to shift your business so that you can continue to serve your clients in spite of your current situation. The great news is that you get to choose! And you are your best ally in making these choices.

“Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion.” ~Steve Jobs

When you’re ready to focus on levelling up your marketing strategies, you may find it helpful to approach the process with mindfulness.

Be kind to yourself

No matter what, be gentle with yourself and take good care of yourself because without a solid you, there is no business. Also, keep in mind that your productivity may vary day-to-day and week-to-week - that is completely normal.

You can only ever do your best in whatever moment you are in. We are in this together and we will get through it together. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
