Amsterdam to host huge year-long party to celebrate 750th birthday

The city of Amsterdam will officially be 750 years old on October 27, 2025. To celebrate, the city is organising a special year-long programme of events, including a huge party in June 2025, which will be held on the A10 ring road

Amsterdam to mark its 750th birthday with year-long celebration

“Amsterdam 750 is more than just a party,” Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said in a press statement. “Especially now that the solidarity in our city has been put to the test in recent weeks by the situation in Israel and Gaza, I see beauty and hope in the way all these different associations, foundations, companies, neighbourhoods and individual Amsterdammers are coming together to contribute to the anniversary year, to celebrate together what unites us: our love for our wonderful city.”

The Amsterdam 750 anniversary year will kick off with a grand opening concert at the Ziggo Dome on October 27, 2024. 15.000 tickets will be available for the concert, a quarter of them reserved for Amsterdammers who make a big contribution to the city, or those who could otherwise not afford a ticket.

Special events to take place all over the city

More than 200 events will then take place over the following 12 months, including musicals, exhibitions, sporting events, community activities, story and photography projects, activities for kids, and much more. Funding will also be made available for smaller community events.

The Amsterdam Museum will stage a special exhibition looking at the history of the city through the eyes of women. The city will also host the “biggest street football tournament in Amsterdam” for young residents of the city, and a special anniversary edition of the Amsterdam Marathon will take place in October 2025.

A10 ring road to be closed on June 21 for big party

On June 21, 2025, the A10 ring road will be closed to traffic to make way for a large and freely accessible celebration, featuring music, sport, theatre, dance and more. The year-long celebration will be rounded off with a “grand event” on October 27, 2025.

“A capital city is only 750 once, so we are planning a massive celebration at a fantastic location,” said Mayor Femke Halsema. “Everyone is welcome to celebrate Amsterdam’s 750th birthday party.”
