PhD position - Critical Approaches to Streaming Data
Updated: 03 May 2024
The Erasmus School of History, Culture, and Communication (ESHCC) at Erasmus University Rotterdam is excited to offer a challenging and innovative PhD position in critical approaches to streaming data.
In recent years, streaming video platforms like Netflix have begun releasing increasing amounts of audience data, albeit lacking the substantive transparency desired by academia and industry observers. However, these "data dumps" offer scholars new avenues to investigate global dynamics in streaming video production and consumption.
This project will investigate the increasing transparency of streaming video platforms like Netflix and its implications for global televisual content production and consumption. Through multi-methodological approaches in Media Industry Studies, it will analyse publicly available data such as Netflix's Top 10 lists and Engagement Reports.
This pioneering research will combine qualitative methods with statistical analysis and data visualization to uncover emerging patterns in streaming behaviour. By taking streaming platforms' audience data seriously, despite their corporate interests, this project aims to provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of media consumption.
