Humanities at Leiden University

Leiden University is well-known for its English-language Bachelor's programmes for international (and local) students wishing to gain a strong understanding of the culture and history of world regions.

Each programme features:
Courses taught in English
Language learning
The option to study abroad for a semester
Three year duration (shorter options also available)
A Bachelor of Arts degree at the successful completion of your studies

The three highlight programmes are Dutch Studies, International Studies and South & Southeast Asian Studies.

Dutch Studies

Leiden University is the only place in the Netherlands where international students can follow a full academic Dutch Studies programme.

As a student of Dutch Studies, you will:
Learn the Dutch language
Study the visual arts of the Lowlands
Examine Dutch literature, linguistics and (art) history
Acquire all the skills necessary to obtain a full understanding of Dutch culture and society

International Studies

In International Studies you will study the history, culture, politics and economy of a world region, and you will learn one of the region’s languages.

As a student of International Studies you will:
 Join an international classroom with over 45 nationalities present
Recieve a broad six month introduction
Choose an world region for specialisation
Study a corresponding language
 Explore the history, politics, economy and culture of your chosen region
Participate in an international exchange
 Complete an internship in the Netherlands or abroad

South & Southeast Asian Studies

South & Southeast Asian Studies offers you a wide range of options for studying this world region in all its diversity.

As a student of South & Southeast Asian Studies you will:
Gain a basic understanding of the history, cultures and modern societies of South and Southeast Asia
Study Hindi, Sanskrit, Tibetan or Indonesian
Follow a "modern" or "classical" specialisation
Spend a semester abroad in India, Indonesia or other destination
Write a thesis on a topic of your choice
