About Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age
Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age is a grand semi-permanent exhibition of 17th century group portraits by three cultural powerhouses - the Amsterdam Museum, Rijksmuseum and Hermitage. The exhibition itself can be viewed in the Hermitage.
Big and beautiful
30 group portraits that are called "brothers and sisters" of Rembrandt’s Night Watch due to their subject and stature, impress with their beautiful art, uniqueness, history and size. Many paintings are so big they had to be lowered down through the museum’s roof by crane. The representations on the canvas are nearly life-size, letting visitors look directly into the eyes of Dutch history through some its most influential historical figures. It’s the first time that a large international audience gets to see all of these impressive pieces together.
The ruling rich
The paintings give insight into 17th century Dutch society and those who ruled: the bourgeoisie. Trade was booming, riches were flowing in and the country lacked a centralised royal family, church or authoritarian figures. Groups featured in the portraits include guilds (like the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons), regents, militias and civil associations in the Dutch Republic.
New: Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson
Now on view in Portraits of the Golden Age is the famous painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman, painted by Rembrandt. Two anatomy cabinets were added to the exhibition, placing The Anatomy Lesson in the context of the traditional Dutch group portrait from the 17th century for the first time.
Please note, ticket competition winners are announced on the closing date. Each winner will receive one double ticket. Remember to check this page or your IamExpat inbox to see if you've been selected!
