Turn on the Lights

The Bijenkorf’s annual Turn on the Lights celebration will again take place on Dam Square in Amsterdam to kick off the holiday season! The lights will shine from November 14 until the beginning of January, so if you miss the ceremony, you can still witness the spectacular lights all throughout the holidays.

Amsterdam lit up

Each year, the Bijenkorf department store on Dam Square puts on a large display with over 400.000 LED lights to showcase the decorations on and around the handsome 19th-century building. This has become one of the traditional markers of the beginning of the festive season in Amsterdam.

Theatre, acrobatics and music on Dam Square

This year, the Bijenkorf will also have performers transforming the Dam into a fairy-tale place with acrobatics, music, lights and magical decorations. The Bijenkorf will celebrate the evening by staying open until 10pm, so visitors can do some late-night shopping accompanied by live music. This is an ideal evening for families and kids looking for something exciting to attend whilst waiting patiently for the school holidays to arrive.

Go and see the Christmas lights

Plan your special evening of seeing the Christmas lights turning on to welcome the arrival of the festival season. For spectators at Turn on the Lights and even for people who are just passing by, it’s good to keep in mind that Damrak and Rokin will be closed to traffic and trams will be diverted for the performance.
